The original WEG Storm Commando picture. Notice all the custom armor.

The Hasbro Storm Commando figure: I'll take full 360 shots of it when I get a chance later. These were on the web. They took some of the SC pieces from above for the head and shins, but used a Shadow Scout body, probably to save cash on the mold.

Rebellion Era Campaign Guide (WotC): Not a clear shot, but you can still see the custom visor and squared ears. These are wearing scout boots though.

StormCommandos-RECG.jpg

This used to be in the SW Databank. Still has custom forarms and shins (judging from the top) You can see the angle on the side of the visor going from the ear to the top of the brim, as opposed to the straight fall on the scout visor. This one has scout knees pads on it.

This one has a cool WWII style bucket, but it differs the most from every other reference and uses TK pieces for the thighs forearms and handplates. Every other piece of armor seems custom, as they don't match either scout or TK style.

I hate when I see something so obviously current military looking in Star Wars. I know most of the guns are based on actual guns, but that thing looks like it wasn't even modded in any way for the art.

Yeah, it looks like something in Call of Duty. Still cool but not very Star Warsy, to me anyway.

Here's quite an interesting picture on Wookiepedia -

File:Stormtrooper_Commando.jpg

The Caption under it reads "A storm commando variant in white armor", and it has been placed within the Storm Commando article. Here's the link - http://starwars.wiki...er_Commando.jpg - I'm not sure if I did the picture thing right.

However, looking at all of the armor, it looks like a standard Scout with a remote in one hand and an explosion in the background. It doesn't appear to differ in any way from a BS.

Keep in mind Wookiepedia is not a controlled source. It has inconsistencies and incorrect data at times.

Now this comes back to the source material and the inconsistency within the EU side of Star Wars.

There are many different illustrators and they each have their own take on what things look like, so there will always be some differences between what artwork is drawn up. The

background literature for them is fairly consistent though.

It does say they are designated Storm Commandos. They are also known as Shadow Scouts, Shadows, or Black Hats. These are terms used by the Rebel Alliance for them.

So the two are the same thing, but just with different illustrators takes on them.

I personally dislike the Shadow Scout thing. They are Storm Commando's. They are the Empires Finest and should be correctly addressed.

There are notable Storm Commando's within the EU scene.

Crix Madine was one, although he turned rebel.

General Wier for another (and he wears Scout based armour, so that should be the giveaway).

Well said Chef...

IMO...even the traditional Biker Scouts get illustrated differently than what is seen in the movie. Note the gloves, biceps, and lack of forearms on this guy. But, it's an artists rendering so it slides. I prefer the term Storm Commando, which further separates the character from the traditional Biker Scouts.

The shadow scout and Storm Commando have always been same unit. The reason we use the term shadow scout, is because our currently approved armor is merely a black scout. The original Storm Commando was made in the WEG RPG and had much different armor. The closest 360 representation of it has been the Gentle Giant bust. (but since it's not a full statue we can't use it alone.)

Apparently I need to come back for a refresher of the raw data. Mike Vilardi, who did the original illustration in the top post:

ImperialStormCommando.jpg

...is one of the better Star Wars artists. His Stormtroopers look right. His Scouts look like Scouts. Han, Luke, and Leia look like the actors. His Commando isn't a case of artistic sloppiness. He specifically designed it to be evocative of Scout Trooper armor, while being visibly different. They had two other appearances in West End Games materials before they lost their license in 1999:

Sc2.jpg

itstorm.jpg

And they also showed up in the Star Wars: Rebellion computer game in the late '90s:

ixcommandos_s.jpg

Even witth different artists' interpretations at work, that's pretty consistent to the original illustration. Then Wizards of the Coast got the license and gave us this:

StormCommandos.jpg

Little too WWII German. But the first time we ever saw black Scout Troopers was in the three-issue Rogue Leader comic miniseries from Dark Horse in late 2003:

Luke_Strom_Commando.jpg

These guys and their leader, General Weir:

Weir.jpg

...are identified in the story as Storm Commandos. This is what happens whenever more than one brain is involved in a project. There's a breakdown in communication or misinterpretation somewhere in there. Either Weir (who does look more Commando-y than the troops with him) prefers the lighter armor of Stormtrooper Scouts and kitted his men out as such, or he was making do with what he could get his hands on following the death of Palpatine and founding o the New Republic, or the artist just plain didn't get that Storm Commandos only look vaguely similar to Scouts at first glance. It's been left to us, the fans, to rationalize it all. That's where the Shadow Scout monicker for Weir's men first popped up. Not as a synonym fo Storm Commando, but as a way to distinguish them from Storm Commandos when describing them to someone.

In-universe, Stormtrooper Scouts are the force recon for a Stormtrooper unit. They have been shown to have the same range of options available to them as regular infantry, like the extreme climate armor. And the black Scouts give them the same heirarchy of elite-ness as other units we see in the same arena. Elite Stormtroopers get nifty black armor and are called Shadow Troopers. Force-trained Royal Guards get nifty black armor and are called Shadow Guards. And elite Scout Troopers get nifty black armor and are called Shadow Scouts. By that point, yes their mission profile will start to blur with the Storm Commandos, but they aren't Storm Commandos.

Storm Commandos are not directly attached to any Stormtrooper unit. They're independently-operating spec-ops units. Shadow Scouts might be Rangers, but these guys are Delta Force. Or S.E.A.L. Team Six. They are counterinsurgency specialists trained and deployed to clandestinely hunt down and counter Rebel activities.

I fought long and hard to get these two costumes separated into distinct categories, as they are nothing alike, except for the vaguest of superficial parallels, like waist pouches and blinders on the helmet. SCs have fully-enclosing bicep and forearm armor. Scouts don't (and it's a different design anyway). SCs have fully enclosing thigh armor. Scouts have none. SCs have Stormtrooper-style body-hugging undersuits and gloves, and ribbed neckseals. Scouts have the looser racing suits, flak vests, and gauntlet gloves. Even the helmets, while somewhat similar in appearance, are utterly unique from one another when placed side-by-side. So don't start blurring these back together in your heads, guys. I know it makes me unpopular, and no one likes to be wrong (lord knows I hate it), but Storm Commandos are not and never have been black Scout Troopers.

The only reason they ever became so, as far as the 501st is concerned, dates back to early 2002 when the Council codified a new breakdown of costume thumbnail descriptions and whoever it was who put it together was as mistaken about Storm Commandos as the artist of Rogue Leader, as he/they described the Storm Commando as a black Scout Trooper. Period. Of course, he/they also described the Magma Trooper as a red Stormtrooper, when that's also wrong. *heh* But that's my other crusade. :P These Detachments are, in large part, about researching the details and origins of the particular costumes under their aegis. It does no one any good to cling to "the way things have always been" when contradictory facts come to light. It should be like science -- a self-correcting process where new discoveries redefine old conceptions as necessary.

Personal addendum. I am not saying this to hate on Shadow Scouts. I love that costume and am working on two of them for friends. However, I am slowly working on sculpting actual accurate Storm Commando armor for myself, too. ;)
