My adventures with Ol' Sparky
Darth Pleatsalot replied to Darth Pleatsalot's topic in First Order Flametrooper
For the little connectors that the tubes connect to in each side of the pressure gauge, I took some little pvc angle connectors, cut them apart, glued them to some Eva foam. Once they are screwed into the piece they attach to, and have the tubes connected, I can squeeze them together closer so they look like what they are supposed to. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Got a bit messy putting this box together today. Ain't nothing I can't clean up before painting. Used a drum stick for the antenna. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I was recommended this, or ABS sludge. I'd imagine the sludge would work too, but $7 for a can of cement, which I know for sure will work, was more cost efficient at the time than a $15-20 can of acetone, and a Mason jar to make sludge, which I wasn't so sure it would work for this particular part. Been trying to figure out how I'm going to put it all together and hold strong. Not sure ca glue, or e6000 would be enough for the stress points. Someone recommended ABS cement. This stuff is messy, but holds strong. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I decided the rectangular areas of the front pieces of the center band were too big. Nothing a little polyflex, sand paper, and elbow grease can't fix. Have I mentioned how much I love polyflex? Left one is old size and still needs fixed. Right one is the new "box" after using some small strips of ABS and polyflex. Still needs some more smoothing with the sand paper, but it looks much closer to the shape it's supposed to than it did before. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Just a rough fit to see how it all goes together. A little bit of trimming is needed for sure. At least I can now see that my approach seems to be working. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
That is a nice looking pack. It may be smart to wait until you get some of the armor pieces together and sized, so you can then get an idea of whether or not you need to modify the pack to be proportional to your height. I'm 5'9", and from what I have read, the MLC is a bit small for taller guys, but I got the impression that it would probably be the right size for me. If I weren't so bull headed, I would have probably bought it rather than make my own. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oops. Just double checked the CRL, and saw that I added an extra space on the panels for the center piece with the cutout rectangles. Also just realized that the reference photos have beveled edges on the inside of the rectangles, but not on the CRL. Oh well. The extra space has been filled in with polyflex, and I'm sticking with the beveled edges: the polyflex really helps get them looking good, so I'm sticking with it. Getting somewhere with this thing. Obviously, I need to take care of some edges and what not, but that's what the handy dremel, PolyFlex, and ABS sludge is for. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Well, I'm now wishing I had just bought a tank pack. The center black casing is proving to be a royal pain. Even with a ruler, I can't ever draw straight lines, nor can I cut straight lines very well. Nonetheless, some progress was made today, sorta. I also managed to burn my finger on some melted plastic while cutting out a piece. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

After taking much more time off from working in ol' sparky than I wanted to, I got back to the grind stone today. I'm way behind schedule on this project, but hopefully I can get caught up soon enough. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
How tall are you? I've heard that the MLC may be proportioned a little on the small side. Sounds like for my height (5'9") it would have been about right, but I wanted the challenge of building it myself. It shouldn't be too hard to make any mods if that ends up being the case. You live close to Reading, don't you? I'm in Lancaster county, which means we aren't too far apart. We may have to meet up sometime and help each other out with fitting this jig saw puzzle armor together. It's gonna be cool to be able to have two flamers at troops. A little De-Solv-It, a razor blade, and some elbow grease helps for a clean slate. And a proper sharpie helps make better patterns. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Thank you! With there only being 2 or 3 of these guys approved in the legion right now, I need to make sure this project looks great. There are a ton of details on this fella, but it's a lot of fun figuring out how to replicate them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

When you discover that the white sharpie you bought, was actually a wax marking stick, but are too stubborn to stop tracing to go get the proper marker, then finish tracing multiple copies just to consider wiping it all clean and starting over. Let this be a reminder to actually read packaging before buying products. I have an idea to make this work. Being stubborn has its downfalls. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Working on the center band today. First thing to do is make the pattern. Once I got the pattern cut out using cardboard, I can start cutting some sheets of abs. I've been dreading this part for awhile, but I can't really avoid it much longer. Not to mention it is way too cold to get anything done in the garage today, and this is a part that I can get a majority of it done in the house. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Do you happen to have a link for all the electronics? I am building my tanks in a manner that will allow me to access the insides for this very reason. Though I'm thinking of trying to hide the switch somewhere so it is out of sight. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Thank you. It is A LOT of work, and a ton of details. I have no artistic abilities. I can't draw/cut a straight line even with a ruler. In the end, it will probably cost more, and not look near as good as one that I could have bought...but...this is way too much fun figuring this out. When all said and done, if it doesn't look like it should, I know a few people that can help make it right. Until then, I'm all about the adventure, and figuring it out. Sloooowly getting there. Eventually, I'll have a tank pack. Stacked 6 pieces of 1/4" ABS to make the thingy that connects the other thingy to the frame. EDIT: I just noticed when looking at the photos that I have the thingy on the frame backwards. Oh well, I did test fit it the correct way, so it's all good. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Made a little progress today. Too bad I'm not ready to paint, because the weather was perfect for it. Also ordered another bollard cover, because it was bugging me how bad I cut the one done piece. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
