ATA/CAP Death Trooper

Recommended Posts

I know you guys might see this as sacrilege, but I've decided to start a thread here anyway. Suggestions for improvements are welcome as always :turned:

My main reference - the Gentle Giant statue.

My armor just before the conversion. The red CAP-W helmet has been spared - it is now a display item on my shelf.

Thighs and belt. The GG thighs didn't look good enough to me so I did something different. $2 althetic tape is used for the bandages. The bandaged thigh is one of the parts I couldn't bring myself to fix on the Magma.

Shadow Stormtrooper helmet from Darth Emphatic. Got a great deal on this one. There are some imperfections, but they blend in well with the other battle damages I created.

The paint job was beautiful, and I almost didn't want to ruin it. But I did anyway...

That's all for now. More pictures to come.

Looks great! I have thought about making a death trooper with my shadow long down the road once it becomes beat up enough where I can't wear it anymore. That will be a very long time though since I have put it together so well. ;)

Rub it in some more why don'tcha LOL :laugh1:

But yeah, the DT is a good way to bring more "life" into a kit that would otherwise serve no purpose. Also, one could argue that it can be one of the cheapest costumes to get into the 501st with - if you start with nothing and just pick up other peoples' broken parts.

Some more progress to show.

The mask, which needs to be painted with a dark shade of green. I also plan to add hanging bits of rotting "flesh" using liquid latex.

Finished abdomen and cod plates. Not feeling too confident about emulating the crater of gore on the GG statue, so this will have to do.

Blood stains added with red acrylic.

Started getting some pieces strapped back together. I'm trying out a velcro setup this time, because I sucked at using snaps

Some makeup I picked up at the party store the other day. It's what I'll use on my hands, left forearm, and possibly the knees.

I'm off to eat some brains. But first, let me take a selfie.

To do list:

- Attack the thermal detonator with the cutting wheel, improve weathering

- Remove bandages from left forearm (that was just a rush job for the con), apply cutting wheel to imitate the GG statue

- Hide Under Armor logo on my back

- Add rear coverstrip to right shin armor

- Improve weathering across all the armor pieces and boots

- Re-size thighs, forearms

- Properly strap upper torso and arms, replace suspender clips with snaps

- Apply prosthetic/makeup to exposed skin

- Convince my brother to pick up a camera again

Thanks all, for the comments.

I've ditched the mask, Steve. I apply gelatin prosthetics directly to my face from now on. I didn't have time to go too heavy on the makeup for the con -- I didn't get as much time to walk around as I would've wanted.

501st pre-application pics! I know there's still a couple things that need to be done, but let's see what you guys think!

Need to hide the suspenders and add a rear coverstrip to the right shin armor.

My next set of shots will be against a solid background, with the fixes applied, and in the GML's inbox

I'm glad you are still working on this. I hope someday we see you go for a Spec Ops costume again too ;)

Of course! After this and my Death Watch suit are done, my next one's definitely gotta be the green swamp Scout

Just sent in my application. There are a couple of things that stick out that might be cause for having to suit up again for a new set of pictures, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to get it done tonight and see what happens. Wish me luck.

Mike, the only things I think your GML might hold you up on are how large some of the pieces, especially the abdomen, appear on your frame. That might work though with an emaciated deathtrooper. The other thing could be the slashes on the boots. I don't see how they make sense, so that your GML might nick you there. Overall the weathering looks terrific IMHO.

I agree. I do think there's more room for more trimming, not only on my abdomen, but also on my forearms and thighs. I figured my chances of getting it cleared wouldn't be 100%, but I had some free time, and my sister was home to shoot pictures  I'll more than likely make these changes even if I do get approved.

As for the boots, I honestly can't tell you what possessed me to cut them up - I just thought it looked cool and different from the rest of the DTs. I'm in a good spot financially to pick up a new pair of boots if my approval gets blocked because of that alone.

Thanks for the constructive feedback, Todd. :turned:

My GML replied this morning saying I only need to tone down the red blood stains and make sure my shins pull over the tops of my boots. Easy fixes I think. I'll make these changes tonight and get a new set of pictures sent :)

This is that same set of red ABS armor that gave me so much trouble a couple years back. Although it may be sprayed over in white, it's Spec Ops armor at its core. I have you guys to thank for following my build, answering all my questions, and offering encouragement.

I look forward to trooping with you all.

- Mike
