TK4108[501st]
Hello Everyone! I just learned from the BHG Detachment Leader that Fenn Rau from Rebels will fall under Spec Ops, so I wanted to get a CRL thread started. Here are some reference pictures. I can provide additional ones, if you think something is missing. 1 Link to comment
TK4108[501st]
Hello Everyone! I’m getting started on my Fenn Rau build, so I wanted share the draft CRL that I’ve been working on. I took the great work Volund Starfire did in the BHG and combined with some of the MMCC standards and a lot of my own research. I’ve included some notes (in green) justifying my recommendations. Sorry that the format isn’t perfect. I’ve not compiled a 501st CRL before. I could really use some recommendations regarding the best way to split requirements across the base-level approval and Specialist. I also submitted a version of these suggestions to the MMCC CRL team, since they are VERY strict about Mandalorian face characters. I’ll be sure to share any feedback that I get. While I don't have any affiliation with them, I also provided my research to Head Shot Props, as they are one of the only builders that has expressed an interest in making parts for this kit. I hope you like it! I would greatly appreciate any suggestions that you may have. Thanks again for getting this started, Volund!!! Cheers! Matt Description: Fenn Rau (Pilot), Rebels Prefix: TX Detachment: Special Operations Detachment Context: Star Wars Rebels, Season 2 Fenn Rau is the leader of the Mandalorian Protectors. The 501st approval requirements are listed in black. The Spec Ops Detachment defines one additional, optional level of costuming excellence. In the page below, requirements for Level 2 "Specialist" are listed in blue. Please visit the Spec Ops website for a full description of these standards. Special Notes: This CRL is a work in progress. While this costume must be approved by the Legion Membership Officer, submissions should still go to the local GML, who will post the application in the appropriate section of the Legion form. If you have this costume and would like to assist with this CRL, please contact your detachment leader. Please note that the use of the word "should" below does not indicate that a requirement is optional. All instances of should will be replaced with must as this guide is completed. Blasters are not required for Legion membership as per our weapons policy. This Visual Guide is draft and has not been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is not certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are not free to approve this costume type. This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum. GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum. Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval. Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size. Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume. Required Costume Components The following costume components must be present and appear as described below. Helmet For 501st approval: Must be an animated Rebels Mando Style helmet. Must have an earcap on either side with an inset vertical line in the center of each earcap and an angled base at the bottom of each earcap. Cheeks and blast shield details are blue. Mandibles, brow, back band, and blast shield details are white or light ice blue. Upper cheeks and back panels are medium / charcoal gray. The dome is black or medium / charcoal gray. Earcaps are light gray. Must feature a blast shield mounted to the forehead w/ Skull Squadron logo in red with three upside down triangle details on each side. The paint chipping and weathering on the helmet must be painted to match visual references as closely as possible both in color and in weathering pattern. Must feature an inset vertical rectangle in the center of the back panel. The top of this rectangle must be flush with the bottom of the brow line. Must have two raised hose inserts on the back of the helmet. Must feature a trapezoidal shape in the center of the back panel. The bottom of this trapezoidal shape must be flush with the bottom of the helmet. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Each ear caps is diagonally slotted on bottom flare. Helmet dome is black. Mandibles, brow, back band, and blast shield details are white. Must feature an inset trapezoidal shape in the center of the back panel. The bottom of this trapezoidal shape must be flush with the bottom of the helmet. Notes: The ear caps did not have the slot on the bottom flare in the comic book or the Fenn Rau A proof drawings. The slots were present in all the Rebels renderings. In the proof drawings and multiple Rebel renderings, the helmet dome is black as compared to the medium / charcoal gray details on the helmet. While in the proof drawings the mandibles, brow, back band, and blast shield details are light ice blue, they appear white in the Rebels renderings and the comic book. The exact color varies depending on the lighting in each scene. This could be argued either way. Flight Suit For 501st approval: Must appear to be a one piece twill, canvas, or similar material flightsuit with full sleeves. Must be medium / charcoal gray. Sleeves must have black ribbing detail down their full length. The ribbing is approximately 2 inches wide. Sleeves must have one black flapped pouches on each bicep. Pouches must have a black, rectangular closures on the flaps. Pant legs must feature one medium / charcoal gray pouch on the front of each thigh. Pouches must have a black, rectangular closures on the flaps. Must be weathered to match visual references. Must fit snugly to the wearer. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): The ribs on the sleeve stripes are approximately 0.5 inches apart. The sleeve pouches are 2.5 inches wide and 4 inches tall with a 2 inch tapered flap. The sleeve ribbing and pouch are made of leather or leather-like material. The thigh pouches are approximately 4 inches wide and 5 inches tall with a 2.5 inch tapered flap. Notes: The flighsuit CRL should have a lot more detail if the flight suit is worn without armor, but that should probably be in its own CRL. The sleeve ribbing might not be leather or leather-like material. Resistance Pilot sleeve ribbing is made of cloth. Flak Vest For 501st approval: Must not have shoulder tabs. Must be made of black leather, leather-like material, canvas, or similar material. Must be weathered to match visual references. Must fit snugly to the wearer. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Must be made of black leather or leather-like material. Notes: Please see Back Armor. As with the sleeve ribbing, the flak vest might not be made of leather or leather-like material. Collar Armor For 501st approval: Must be turtle-style collar armor and appear to be at least 3 mm thick with rounded edges. Must be made of plastic, metal, or other rigid material. The shoulder portion of the collar armor must be painted medium / charcoal gray. The shoulder portion of the collar armor does not extend past the flak vest. The neck portion of the collar armor must be painted medium / charcoal gray or black. The paint chipping and weathering on the collar armor must be painted to match visual references as closely as possible both in color and in weathering pattern. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Both the shoulder and neck portions of the collar armor must be painted medium / charcoal gray. Must be as seamless as possible. Must have a groove approximately 0.25 inches from the top of armor covering the neck. Notes: While the armor covering the neck appears black in the proof drawings, that is actually a shadow. In all the Rebels renderings, the armor covering the neck and shoulders are both medium / charcoal gray. While seams are not visible in the proof drawings or Rebels renderings, they are required to physically wear the armor. Shoulder Armor For 501st approval: Must be made of plastic, metal, or other rigid material. Must appear to be at least 3 mm thick with rounded edges and curve around the upper arm. Must be painted blue with white or light ice blue striping detail to match visual reference. Must attach securely to the flight suit. Must be painted and weathered to match references both in color and weathering pattern. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Must be painted blue with light ice blue striping detail to match visual reference. Notes: While the paint on the helmet varies between white and light ice blue depending on the source, the striping on the shoulder armor is always light ice blue. Chest Armor For 501st approval: Must be made of plastic, metal, or other rigid material. Must consist of right chest plate, left chest plate, and ab plate. Chest diamond is not required, but it must not be visible if present. Must appear to be at least 3 mm thick with rounded edges. Must be blue to match visual references. All plates must be painted and weathered to match references both in color and weathering pattern. Must attach securely to the vest with proper spacing. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Chest diamond must be present, but not visible when chest box is mounted. Notes: Existence or lack of chest diamond can not be confirmed, but it is assumed to be present. Chest Box For 501st approval: Must be made of plastic, metal, or other rigid material. Must be painted light gray. Attached to a smaller, raised platform which is attached to the chest plates. Must have one green light and one white light on the wearer’s left. The lights must match visual references in placement, shape, and size. Must feature a smaller raised rectangular portion. Raised section must feature three red lights and one black button that match visual references in placement, shape, and size. Must feature a cylindrical section attached to bottom that allow for the attachment of a hose on each end. Cylindrical section must feature medium / charcoal gray section in the center. Light gray hoses with ribbed detail attach to the cylindrical section and go up the front of the costume and drape over the shoulders where they then extend to back of helmet and attach to the raised hose inserts on the back of the helmet. Must be painted and weathered to match references both in color and weathering pattern. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Raised rectangular portion must have a sloped top and bottom. Cylindrical section must feature medium / charcoal gray section with ribbed detailing in the center. Hoses must primarily be smooth, unlike TIE Pilot hoses. Green, white, and red lights must light up. Notes: TBD Back Armor For 501st approval: May either be armor with raised box-structure, similar to a Stormtrooper’s, or just the box-structure itself. Must be made of plastic, metal, or other rigid material. Must be black and feature printed or otherwise obvious detailing that matches visual references. Must be painted and weathered to match references both in color and weathering pattern. Attachment method must be hidden. If armor is used, it must extend under the collar armor. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Must blend in with the flak vest as much as possible. Must be flat rather than glossy black. The top of the box-structure and the chest box should be close to parallel. Notes: The back armor is confusing. It looks like hard armor while also being a part of the flak vest. There are no seams between the back armor and the flak vest in either the proof drawings or the Rebels renderings. The back armor could be a box on top of the flak vest, under the flak vest, or part of rigid back armor, like a Stormtroopers. The back armor could be made using a TIE Pilot back piece with the required details added to the raised box. Gauntlets For 501st approval: Must be made of plastic, metal, or other rigid material. Must be low profile and streamlined. Must have black lines to match visual references. Must be painted white or light ice blue. Must be painted and weathered to match references both in color and weathering pattern. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Must be painted white. Must have two black marks or indents on each side, matching the visual references. The black lines will be grooves in the gauntlet. Notes: While in the proof drawings the gauntlets are light ice blue, they appear white in the Rebels renderings and the comic book. The exact color varies depending on the lighting in each scene. This could be argued either way. Gloves For 501st approval: Must be made of leather or similar material. Must feature a geometric design on the back of the hand. This can be part of the glove or a hand armor. Must feature a blue elongated hexagon detail on the back of the hand. Must be white or light ice blue. Must be weathered to match visual references. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Must be white. The geometric design on the back of the hand must be part of the glove rather than rigid armor. Notes: While in the proof drawings the gloves are light ice blue, they appear white in the Rebels renderings and the comic book. The exact color varies depending on the lighting in each scene. This could be argued either way. The geometric pattern on the back of the gloves bent when Rau moved, so it was not rigid. Belt For 501st approval: Must be made of leather or similar material as to appear textureless. Must be approximately 2 inches wide. Must be light gray. Must feature a buckle on the front with red detail that matches visual references. Must be weathered to match visual references. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Red detail on buckle must light up. Nylon or cotton webbing will not be used. Notes: It difficult to tell what material should be used for the belt and harness. By counting pixels on the proof drawings, the belt seems to be 2 inches wide rather than 3 inches if you use the harness being 1 inch wide as a reference measurement. Holsters For 501st approval: Must be made of plastic, metal, or other rigid material. Must attach securely to the harness on the outside of both legs. Must be constructed to match visual references. Must be painted light gray. Must be painted and weathered to match references both in color and weathering pattern. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Holster are mounted in the middle of the thigh, centered between belt and the harness wrapping around the knee. Color must match the belt and straps. Notes: Holsters could be made of semi-rigid material, like stiff leather. Harness For 501st approval: Material must match the belt. Must be light gray and approximately 1 inch wide. Must feature a strap on the outside of each leg that extends from the belt to the knee. A loose strap must wrap around each knee and must be attached to the strap on the outside of each leg. Must feature a strap that goes from the belt buckle to the inseam. This strap must not run to the back of the belt. Must be weathered to match visual references. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Nylon or cotton webbing will not be used. Notes: It difficult to tell what material should be used for the belt and harness. Shin Armor For 501st approval: Must be cylindrical and made of plastic, metal, or other rigid material. Must be white or light ice blue with blue details, a light gray band around the top, and a medium / charcoal gray vertical stripe on the front to match visual references. Must be weathered to match visual references. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Must be white with blue, light gray, and medium / charcoal gray details. Notes: While in the proof drawings the shin armor appear light ice blue, they appear white in the Rebels renderings. The exact color varies depending on the lighting in each scene. This could be argued either way. Boots For 501st approval: Must not have any visible zippers, laces, straps or other apparent securing method. Must be charcoal or black leather or leather-like material. White or light ice blue spats will be used between the boots and the shin armor. Must be weathered to match visual references. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Boots must be black Chelsea boots. Spats must be white. Notes: It isn’t clear if spats are actually used. They could just be part of the shin armor. This requirement could be removed. Other methods could be used to create the white or light ice blue ring between the lower boots and the shin armor. While in the proof drawings the spat are light ice blue, they appear white in the Rebels renderings. The exact color varies depending on the lighting in each scene. This could be argued either way. The proof drawings even provide an inverse color option for the boots and spats. Optional Accessories Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use. Balaclava A plain medium / charcoal gray balaclava is acceptable if the helmet is to remain on. If the helmet is to be taken off in public, the following items are required: Must be medium / charcoal gray balaclava with two blue stripes extending from the forehead to the back of the head. The blue stripes are trimmed in black and terminate in a point at the back of the head. A white horizontal stripe, trimed in black, extends over the top of the forehead. Must have ear caps with a yellow rectangle and silver cylinder details to match visual reference OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Detailed balaclava is required even if the helmet is to be worn continually. Must have a small black rectangle on the back of the balaclava. White horizontal stripe must match the shape of the visual references. Please see Neck Seal for additional requirements. Notes: TBD Dual Westar-35s Must be painted and weathered to match references both in color and weathering pattern. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): Must be painted medium / charcoal gray, light gray to match Rebels Fenn Rau / Clan Wren design. Must have blue stripe across the top of the blaster. Must have black rectangle on top of the blaster. Must have red detail near tip of the barrel. Notes: Clan Wren, not including Sabine, used Westar-35’s with the same paint scheme as Fenn Rau. Neck Seal Please see Collar Armor. As seperate neck seal is not required due to turtle-style collar armor. OPTIONAL For level two certification (if applicable): The neck seal extends approximately 0.5 inches above the rigid collar armor. Must be medium / charcoal gray, with the the throat and its top edge trimmed in black. May be integrated with the balaclava. Notes: Most of the neck is covered by the collar armor. The neck seal may actually be a part of the balaclava rather than a seperate piece. 1 Link to comment
RAIDER[COTG]
Thanks for hopping in here @TK4108 Good to have you here. I haven't been contacted by the LMOs or BHG regarding this CRL. Let me get in touch w/ them to make sure we have a greenlight to proceed. THANKS!!! Heads up @Tarrif @Blackwatch Link to comment
RAIDER[COTG]
Alright @TK4108 I've received responses from our LMO reps ( @Hask and @stormtrooperguy ) here at Spec Ops and a response from Amy over at BHG. Just so it's documented here, BHG declined non-bounty hunter/non-mercenary mandos and suggested seeing if they would fit here. I was initially told to check "fit" by the new LMO team by doing some background reading. Note, we have had the Imperial Supercommandos (and Gar Saxon would apply as well) on standby here for awhile, and after getting an update from @Scubacat (our DL last term) she confirmed that those were indeed agreed upon in a FB chat to be housed here. Fenn Rau was not mentioned (or she had no recollection of that being suggested). I've gone through the chat as well and did not see Fenn Rau in any of those discussions...only Imperial Supercommandos and the like. I searched Fenn Rau on https://www.starwars.com/databank/fenn-rau It states in the canon description that he accepts payment for his services to the Empire prior to defecting to the Rebellion. Yes...he and the Protectors ( https://www.starwars.com/databank/the-protectors ) served the Empire but according to this it was in a mercenary fashion because Mandalore was under Imperial occupation. Contrast this to Gar Saxon (who definitely fits here at Spec Ops w/ the Supercommandos), https://www.starwars.com/databank/gar-saxon who was an Imperial Loyalist, held an Imperial title, and whose commandos had Imperial issued armor (with Imperial cogs no less). They were even responsible for destroying the Protectors and attempting to kill Fenn Rau under Imperial orders ( https://www.starwars.com/databank/imperial-supercommandos ) So, all that to say...I'm hesitant that our detachment, which houses Imperial forces not mercenaries, is the proper fit for Fenn Rau. We (Spec Ops) absolutely love giving costumes a home that are struggling to find one (i.e. the Imperial Army), but this one in particular feels more than out of place...a Mandalorian loyalist, turned mercenary due to Imperial occupation, turned Rebel. Add to this, he doesn't seem to have ever been included in the discussion from what I've read in that FB chat that Torri was in on (I'm not sure if you're in that group or not). Has Underworld been considered/approached for this? They have accepted Rebel defectors and mercenary types into their ranks (i.e. Two-Tubes). I'm open to your feedback on this. Quite possibly I'm missing some details about the lore. While I am now up-to-speed and in the FB chat, I would prefer to have the discussion here. I've also asked both of our LMOs to examine it and to take it to the full LMO team for consideration if needed. P.S. Please note again, my initial reaction does not apply to Gar Saxon/Captain Hark/Commandos. I do feel they absolutely fit within the scope of Spec Ops. 2 Link to comment
TK4108[501st]
Hi Raider, I agree that it seems a little out of place here and I'm a bit confused myself. I thought that the BHG would be the best fit, because Fenn Rau and the Mandalorian Protectors in Rebels were mercenaries working for the Empire. (In the show, they were even shown receiving payments from the Empire.) The only thread I could find on starting a CRL for Fenn Rau was started in 2016 on the BHG forums (http://thebhg.net/forum/index.php?/topic/3787-rebels-mandalorian-protector-crls/), so that is where initially posted my research. Shortly after I posted my recommended updates, Amy let me know that Fenn Rau and the Protectors had moved here. (http://thebhg.net/forum/index.php?/topic/5170-rebels-mandalorians/) The only Mandos from Rebels that the BHG plans to keep is Bo Katan. Since I was not privy to any of the discussions and technically mercenaries aren't the same a bounty hunters, I was not in a position to disagree. Personally, I'm not wed to any particular detachment as a home for this character. I would just like to find the best place to get support for what I feel is a pretty cool character. ? I'm very open to any recommendations you and the other Detachment Leaders may have. No, I haven't reached out to the Underworld, but I will. The last thing I would want to do is push a character on to a detachment that doesn't want it. Thank you so much for your time and support! 2 Link to comment
RAIDER[COTG]
@TK4108 Thank you for your understanding. It sounds like we are on the same page regarding our thoughts about the placement of the costume here. I'm so sorry if you feel you're being bounced around. Please don't let that discourage your build. I feel you could present this to the Mercs and the Rebel Legion most certainly. After feedback from some of our team, I've let the LMOs know our position here at Spec Ops...it doesn't seem the best fit for Fenn and the Protectors. If the LMOs ultimately decide it needs to be placed here, we would welcome it nonetheless. That said, I have recommended Underworld be contacted. You may contact them as well. In the meantime, we can take a peek at your write-up and give some recommendations on Level 1/Level 2 text. Think of Level 1 as the absolute necessities to pull off the costume look...and Level 2 as the fine details that wouldn't normally be noticed. 1 Link to comment

TK4108[501st]
Looks like this costume will go the Jolly Roger Squadron. I will share the link to the CRL development thread here once it has been posted. 2 Link to comment
