Proposed Imperial Death Trooper CRL Update

Proposed Imperial Death Trooper CRL Update

Feedback and discussion will be open from now until 01 June 2020.

It has been almost three and half years since the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and since then there have been many high quality photos of the Death Trooper released and with the re-emergence of the Death Trooper in Star Wars: The Mandalorian once again the spotlight is shining brightly on the Empire’s Elite Special Operations Forces.

For the last few months, the Spec Ops Staff have been working on an updated CRL. This will align the CRL with what we now know about the Death Trooper and its armor and provide needed clarification for many questions the Spec Ops Staff have received from GMLs over the last few years.

The Death Trooper will be divided into Versions. Version 1 will be the basic Death Trooper. Version 2 with be called “The Specialist Variant” and will include version 1 requirements and add in the “optional accessories” equipment of the pauldron, chest rig with magazines, and the fragmentation grenades.

This will also help GMLs to view each individual piece of armor for initial Version 1 approval and then view Version 2 with the “Specialist” equipment.

Additionally, we have now included Level 2 requirements so that Death Troopers can take their armor to the next level and submit for the 501st Special Operations “Specialist” Program. This is not to be confused with the Version 2 “Specialist Variant.”

Accommodations were considered for all the current Death Trooper armor makers’ kits when proposing the updates. This will allow individuals who are currently in the process of building kits to continue with what they have and not have to buy new pieces or change what they have right now. Almost all the changes to the CRL are cosmetic and clarifications to what is currently in the CRL.

As the items are listed, there may be additional links to photos that we used when working out the details of the updates. Some of those links will become part of the CRL are “reference photos” and will assist builders and GMLs as they go through the build or approval process. Other links maybe inserted as the photos or comments were used when we discussed the updates and will provide answers for many questions as to how or why we came up with the changes.

This “Proposed Update” will be posted in this sub-forum for public discussion and input.

There have been discussions recently of how certain pieces of the Death Trooper armor were constructed and attached with other pieces, but because none of that is visible when the costume is worn, it was not considered a requirement for the CRL.

Keep in mind that the CRL is not intended to be a detailed “how a costume was constructed” document but rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. There have been no changes to “how a piece was attached or strapped to another” nor will there be any updates to the CRL which reflect that. To put it in layman’s terms; If it looks like a Death Trooper, walks like a Death Trooper, and talks like a Death Trooper, then it is a Death Trooper.

Description: Imperial Death Trooper Version 1 “Basic”

Prefix: TX

Detachment: Spec Ops Detachment

Context: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Death troopers were an elite variant of the Galactic Empire's stormtroopers. They served as protective details and bodyguards for important Imperial officers. They also acted as guards for officers in the Tarkin Initiative. They wore black suits of armor and specialized helmets that scrambled verbal communications. Death troopers were trained in unarmed combat, heavy weapons, and sniping. As they specialized in commando missions, the troopers were experts at covering their tracks, leaving little evidence of their missions.

Costume Weathering:

●   The costume's armor and hard pieces are gloss black.

●   The Death Trooper costume may be slightly weathered to produce a worn look. The weathering must be uniform across all costume parts. If weathered, a light grey or white tint paint wash, or        dry brush technique, or powder dusting may be used to create the oxidized or dirty effect. More information can be found on the SpecOps Detachment Forums. https://imgur.com/a/lIiZAxN

Contrasting Color Scheme:

Some parts have a contrasting color scheme between gloss black, matte or metallic black, matte silver, or matte dark gray. More information can be found on the SpecOps Detachment Forums. https://imgur.com/a/38EiQr8

Some parts have addition colors to highlight recesses or grooves. These are defined in each piece’s description along with reference photos.

Black text indicates a feature that is required for approval. Blue text denotes requirements for Level 2 "Specialist” but is not required for basic approval. Red text indicates features that take the prop/costume item to an even higher level of accuracy.

For 501st membership only the requirements listed in black need to be met.

Special Notes:

●   The armor parts shall be gloss and made from one of these types of materials or like materials: Fiberglass, PLA, PETG, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), or HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene).

●   If any of the parts are 3D printed there shall be no visible print lines

●   Blasters are not required for Legion membership per our weapons policy.

This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.

●   This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.

●   GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.

●   Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized and are not criteria for Level 1 approval but may be required for Level 2 requirements.

●   Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.

●   Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GML's and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.

Special Notes:

●   The armor parts shall be gloss and made from one of these types of materials or like materials: Fiberglass, PLA, PTEG, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), or HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene).

Just a quick notice of correction -- PTEG should be PETG, for Polyethylene Terephthalate, Glycol Modified.

Otherwise, this revision is incredible.  Exactly what I need right now as I just finished printing my full armor set out of PETG from Tom Campbell's files and I am in the process of assembling, sanding and painting everything for final approval.

Awesome revision and thanks very much for the detail and hard work!

Only part id not be happy with is boots.. ive had this stance from day one...  Jereds are not easy to get,  and i dont feel the need to buy another pair of boots (it really is the least important part of the kit) Talibs are same in principle...  so replicas or talibs... would make more sense... imo.

@Atraxas Aston, appreciate the feedback. Talibs have always been and will continue to be acceptable for Level 1 approval. Level 2 items are always the same for any CRL, they are the items that take the costume to the next higher level of detail and or screen accuracy. Because the horizontal seam and some ankle padding is seen on the Jereds at the ankle even when the shin armor is worn it becomes part of the higher level detail, much the same way that those pesky little "split rivots" are on the TKs and Shadow Troopers. Though Talibs have the correct toe and sole, the rear part of the Talib has an additional piece of leather on the heel and the leather pull tab is located at the top of the boot. There is stitching on the Jered that resembles the extra piece on the talib heel but the extra piece of leather is narrow and is part of the pull tab on the Jereds. It is for that reason we chose the Jered or replica boot as a Level 2 requirement.

08qRUnk.png

I myself have the Talibs and am fully aware that if I wanted to shoot for Level 2 that I must either modify my Talibs to look like the Jereds or purchase replicas. Also there are  a few other things I will have to tweak or change on my own set if I want to reach Level 2. I fully understand your opinion but to be realistic, there are many CRLs that have Level 2 or 3 requirements where the items are no longer in original production and are hard to find so we have to resort to replicas.

Thank you again for your feedback, it is appreciated.

I know that there had been some debate about a corset style trunk section. I’ve been working on mine and have been playing around with mine and wanted to know if a corset style trunk would be acceptable or should I abandon working on it?

@Chaos can answer better...but if the corset style is an unseen (not including any unintentional "gotcha" costume zoom ups on super HD) construction method it won't be mentioned here.  You could do it...but the CRL covers visible components not the underworkings persay (at least most of the time).

But again, I defer to Chaos here.

And with any CRL update, I should note that those that have already been approved are not affected by the update nor required to meet the new standards.  The new standards apply to new trooper submissions following the publishing of the update (usually we ask GMLs to give a month or so grace period for those that may be mid-build), any troopers wishing to achieve Level 2 Specialist (this includes troopers approved prior to the update), and to any troopers who go to "retired" status in their garrison and have to submit for re-approval.

@RMGFitness the corset style strapping that has been worked on by some is definitely acceptable now and after the update. So you can rest assured. Just be cognizant of any strapping components that are visible. For example; the black vertical thigh straps being visible is OK, but a black buckle exposed on the side is not. Good point to bring up, thank you for your feed back, it is much appreciated.

Does this mean the pouch is meant to be attached to the left vertical strap for the chest rig, rather than between the chest & left shoulder as the current CRL model shows?

@AgentDarthMando  Ben, Thank you for your feedback, the current CRL says "Worn  on left shoulder" the intent was to make sure it was positioned correctly on the front and not too high up on the shoulder and to do away with an extra strap that some people were wearing, they had the ammo pouch slung over the shoulder with an extra strap that ran across their chest. (I have seen it twice and since it says "worn on left shoulder" technically it isn't wrong. So what we did was make it essentially a part of the chest rig assembly, we can modify the statement to this "Worn on left  upper chest and attached to either the chest rig vertical strap or the left shoulder strap D-ring."  That should make it clearer. Thanks again for your feedback.

Just wanted to add my $.02.  I'm not a 501st member yet as I'm still working on my first build.  However, I've been following these forums almost daily for the 2 months I've been working on this.  The boot issue is one that has come up before.  One guy found some $20 boots that didn't even have the ribbing on the soles and was a little miffed when it was suggested he add that detail, though he was told they would pass Level 1 as is.

I just wanted to add my support for the authenticity required by the Jereds for Level 2.  Everyone should remember that this requirement is for Level 2 Specialist (not Heavy Weapons Specialist) certification, and not for general approval.  This gives us all something to strive for and to be a Specialist means you put forth the extra time, effort and even money to make your suit as authentic as possible.

I personally found a pair of Mayer boots so I didn't have to order the "killer" (replica Jereds) from Imperial Boots (not that Imperial Boots are bad, I've read great things, but the wait time was ... interesting).  In order to make the Mayer boots fit the Level 2 requirements, I'd need to add stitching, move the pull tab down, and take down the shine a bit.  To me, that's what Level 2 authenticity is all about, and people who go through that extra step should be rewarded, while those with Level 1 are still pretty remarkable as this is one of the most difficult suits to build (from what I've read).

Again, I'm new, but I want to commend the staff on an excellent job on the revisions and the balance between approvable Level 1 and authentic Level 2.  Here's waiting to see if there is ever a Level 3 ...

I appreciate that kind of input @DHKnecht and I am so glad you stepped out of the shadows to participate (pun intended).  THANK YOU!

Here, we just try to make any higher level requirements Level 2 and call it a day...because yea...some of our more recent Disney-canon costumes here at Spec Ops are among the toughest, most detailed builds indeed.  Thanks for joining in the convo.

@DarmanFG Julien, Good eye on the detail. I was aware of the detail (actually noticed it one day when I was working on the boots Level 2 info), and had considered including it. I decided not to include it based upon the fact that most makers produce "one sizes fits all." This means that people with shorter lower legs have to do some type of trimming to make the shins the correct fit and length. The top details are such that you can't trim from that area as it would be very noticeable so the only other place to trim off length is at the bottoms, which if done, could possibly take the grooved detail completely out. 3D printed kits can be sized and that detail can be included in as the shins can be scaled to fit the wearer. We can (if @nanotek and @Raider agree) put that detail in as a Level 2, after all that is what Level 2 is for; adding in the finer details for accuracy. You can see when I was doing my research for the CRL update I made a note.

Once again Thank you for your feedback and your eye for detail. If you wouldn't mind, can you post a photo of your shin with the detail and a brief "how you made it"? Just in case others out there may want to add it in.

For the shins, if that detail would be “lost” for short troopers (I picture the female DT I met from Puerto Rico Garrison as an example) due to trimming...maybe not include.  L2 should still be inclusive for different sized people.  Could list it as an optional L2 item so the detail is still included on the CRL

@DarmanFG I have seen that on the kits that are were displayed at LFL and noticed that the belts were thicker than the original ones that were on the SWC kits. The SWC kits were just the rubber matting with some kind of belted support underneath. Maybe as they moved kits around for displays they found that the belts were sliding down so they added a strip of foam weathering striping tape to help hold them in place. I don't think that since there are differences in the display belts from one set of photos to another that we need to change anything on the belt. That kind of thing sort of falls under "strapping and assembly" since it is possible they only used the foam tape on the displays. If you take a look at the Sideshow 1:1 statue (which was modeled/made from the set kits) you can see that the belt is thin just like the SWC belts. We don't use toys or statues as references when we have the screen shots and actual used suit displays, but it does have a lineage just like the Anovos helmet.

Concur, and it is an easy fix if a kit doesn't have it. For instance, the shin's inside triangular flap closure on the screen suits is a part of the outer shin that wraps around the inner shin to allow for the shins to open and close at the ankle (Some makers modified their original designs after better photos came out) but on my kit from Jim, that piece is molded into the inner shin, so I took a dremel and grooved out the inside edges to give the appearance of it being a separate piece. I am planning on doing the same with the small groove we just mentioned, I'll grind down just enough of the surface to create the  indentation. Eezy Peezy!

Yea after thinking on it more I think u should add it as an optional Level 2 item...im all for preserving costume info we know in the crl tho this one prob isnt 100% necessary for requirement for shorter troopers.  Sound good?

I already made the change. I think that is the correct thing to do. Preserve the integrity of the costume. After all many people LFL and Disnet Prop and Costume workers shed a lot of sweat and tears to bring us this awesome and intimidating character!

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):

●   There is a raised strip that begins at the rear vertical cover strip angled up and around the left outside shin and joins the front vertical cover strip. The top edge of the raised strip is angled and aligned as if it is an extension of the raised angular extension or flap just above the inside ankle

●   There is an indented groove approximately 1/2 inch (13 mm) wide that runs along the inside bottom of both shins from the rear center to the beginning of the front boot arc. This detail is partially covered by the triangular closure flap.

Im saying I would add the word Optional in front of that yellow bit.  So it is even optional for Level 2 approval.  See Shadow Scout CRL thermal detonator as an example of what I mean.
