Burns1214 Swamp Trooper Build

Ok guys, I've decided that I want to do the swamp trooper as my next build and keep the spec ops theme going! Right now I pretty much have parted out everything. Will be getting my hard parts from SC and painting them. Now my first question is - I feel like I should find the vinyl for the boots first so that I can match the paint for the rest of the armor and just take the vinyl and color match it somewhere. Just cause they dont make every color in vinyl and I'd like things to match up. I dont want to go a lot darker sinse the cummerbund has to be a dark/forrest green and the armor appears to be just a regular green. Im up for any and all input! Thanks in advance.

Pretty close with one boot so far. Couldn't use an exacto blade or razor blade with these cause the rubber was way too tough and I would have wound up most likely stabbing myself! So I used my trusty dremel to get the job done. Just need to clean it up a little and straighten some edges. Got word the vinyl shipped today as well. Went with the one from etsy so we will see if it matches the picture by the end of the week hopefully.

Getting there!

-Cummerbund was also ordered from a gentleman I found on one of the facebook groups. If anyone needs or wants his info feel free to message me. Can't sew to save my life so for me personally I'm good with parting the soft goods out. Im much better with plastic parts or the non sewing items!

-Gloves are coming from wampa wear and should be here in a few days.

-Also found a complete flight suit as well from a person on etsy (goes by the name KriptonTop) who makes them for the biker scouts and I will be more than happy to share specifically where I got the soft goods if anyone wants to know.

-Will be ordering the webbing and elastic soon as per the crl. Then I am sure I can find a black balaclava easily at any sporting goods store or online if necessary.

Vinyl came in. Heres a pic of the color in outside light and inside light. I personally like the color. Its a little darker than regular green but not too dark. A nice median. Boots to begin being made Monday. Until then will try to find matching thread.

That looks pretty darn good. The armor matching is really the key here. Colors could be ever so slightly different one trooper to the next, as long as your boots and armor match on your own, you'll be in good shape.

Agreed. Once I color match this, I will put the name and label of the paint here for reference so if others do this build we can have some uniformity.

Wampa wear gloves arrived safe today. Only thing that needs to be done to them is to cut the hooks off of the sides of them that are used to clip them together. Also found a balaclava at a place called sun and ski sports. Since it is summer year round in Houston, this is basically the only store you can find it in thats available year round and cheaper than what you will find on the internet.

 

Now we wait for the cummerbund and the flight suit. Both should be another 2 - 3 weeks. Will post a picture of the boots as they are built. Step by step instructions for the boots can be easily found on bikerscout.net under the boots tutorial.

Oook! Cummerbund will be here Wednesday. No word on flight suit as of yet but I expect it in about 2 weeks.

 

Now on to the paint matching task. I have taken the green vinyl I have purchased on etsy with me to 4 different stores: Lowes, Home Depot, Sherwin Williams Paint, and of course Walmart. And of course at Walmart was the only spray paint I found that was the closest. Uploaded is a picture of a strip of red abs that I tested this paint and primer on. Its NOT a PERFECT match but its one of the closest I can find. The paint blends perfect with the abs. Now I'm not sure if the red abs affects the finished color but I dont think it did since I used primer first. Also a bit of information, it doesn't appear that they make these spray paints in semi gloss. So that being said I'm stuck using gloss due to the crl stating it must either be semi or gloss. So I think I am going to try using a matte clear coat to turn the shiny down a little which may help the color match a little bit more. But we will see when I test again. Let me know your thoughts!

Yep, that looks pretty good and tinning it down should work. Be curious to test that on a scrap piece to see if it changes the color at all.

Ok. Depending on how you see the pictures, the first one is the clear matte finish over the green. It doesnt feel any different but it looks like it gives a leather texture. The second one is a semi gloss finish. Clearly a little more shiny but much smoother. So I'm leaning more towards the semi gloss right now.

 

-In other news - the cummerbund is in! It fits perfect and looks great. All I have to do is attach the pouches to it.

 

**However - The CRL states for the swamp trooper that there must be 6 vertical lines? The CRL for the Biker Scout says 6 vertical stitches. As does the CRL for shadow scout says 5-6 ribs. And other builders have 5 lines with 6 stiches as well. Even the post on the swamp trooper CRL and specialist requirements state that under the soft parts for specialist posted by Chef state there should be 6 or 7 stitches giving 5 or 6 raised areas between pouches for the swamp trooper. So not sure if this is just a simple typo in the CRL on the 501st site but something that should be looked into. Even if going off the reference photos it shows the video game character had what appeared to be 8 ribs with 9 stitches...?**

*Update on cummerbund CRL*

The question was resolved per Steve (Darth Emphatic) our DL, that 5 or 6 vertical lines are allowable which is the same as 6 or 7 vertical stitch lines. An update to the CRL is pending to show this. Thanks Steve!!
