PROPOSAL - MUDTROOPER CRL UPDATES (Complete)

Would it be appropriate to cite dimensions of each of the boxes?   Really, any of these descriptors are relative.  Dimensions would be the most definitive guidance.

We have the dimensions in the initial CRL proposal discussion that took place last year and it was decided to hold off on those for 2 reasons...

1) A GML typically just receives front/back full body submission photos...sometimes sides.  The dimensions of the box are unidentifiable from those types of shots.

2) If we add the dimensions (at least at Level 1), then we have GMLs asking for additional photos for submission using measuring tape up against each box/side.

I am for accurate costumes but that would be excessive for a Level 1 applicant.  Now, Level 2 addition...possibly.

Ah!  that totally makes sense!

You guys know Pantone isn't some stupid expensive color?

I got mine from My Perfect Color...buy like 4 cans and it's like 40 bucks with shipping. In the grand scheme of things that is pretty cheap. Considering you're gonna do coats and also have some on spare for repairs (or resell).

No photo description available.

The Pantone removal is not about expense or availability but rather accuracy. As stated, 350U is a misleading reference - it really means nothing unless combined with 433U. A more generic colour makes sense.

You basically combine both colors to get the desired look. However mudtroopers really are a muted blue green, italian olive doesn't give you that. You can skate with applying 433u ontop of the olive as I did, you're in the ballpark.

Keep something in mind, Lewis told me they were doing sets of 15-30. The look and color is not gonna be consistent. Some where full oversprays, some where drive by sprays.

If it were me, 433u as a top coat should be mandatory level 2.

Are we adding a hero version or doing a separate CRL for Han?

Han is a "good guy" and unlike the rest of Beckett's crew (which are never labeled or depicted as such) would not be a 501st approvable character.  I.E.  There are no approvable helmet-less TK versions of Han, Luke, or even Finn's bloody helmet.

Here is my point though, he's not. He's Imperial Army and only after he meets up with Beckett he deserts. His costume has a few changes in it, and it may be worth exploring.

LMOs won't clear it.  The precedent for that is pretty much set since ANH...but Finn would be a better example...it's a rejected costume even though he was officially a First Order Trooper when his bucket was bloodied.  I have a local friend that attempted to pass it and it was denied.  What you are suggesting falls into that category.  This was discussed and covered however in the early Mudtrooper CRL discussions last year.

Focusing on your proposed points @JAFO...it seems that color is the biggest update.  I'm open to wording and adjusting that to how you guys all feel.  It can be removed and replaced w/ a generic color OR as @GottMitUns205 suggested we can beef it up w/ the added color topcoat.  I'm ok w/ either...whatever will keep the troops as uniform in color as possible.

Lower belt is cleaned up as @87ninefiveone suggested by @Blackwatch .  Are we ok w/ his updated wording of that?  Do we want to add the box dimensions to Level 2 (that's an added thing to be cleared in order to achieve Specialist rank here at the detachment) that @quigontimm asked about?

Goggles...text needs adjusting and an updated item pic.  I would add, that we have the ability now to add galleries to CRLs with additional detail pictures and views.  See the Imperial Army Sapper or Shadow Scout CRLs for examples. Some of the goggle strapping and glides can be done in closeup in the gallery.

Add DLT-19....flashlight on right side?

Lastly...the respirator.  I had 2 questions about...

1) Removing rubber trim.  Adding in the rubber mask interior?  I believe I saw somewhere that it was like a spray paint rubber mask or somesuch.

2) Can you elaborate on the M4 hex screw vs. simply hex screw?  That was a detail heavily debated in staff area as going entirely Level 2 last year.  We settled on Level 1 for it.  Can the specific type go Level 2?

Sorry mate!  Trust me...I go to bat for costumes...I have LMO clearance to do the others in the gang...but Han was a no go back when.  I can ask one more time...new LMO team.  Who knows.

The only photo we have of the DLT up close and not super foggy has the light on the right side mid barrel. I'm making the assumptions it's the same light as the e-10/E-11.

Upon chatting with Darren, I'm not so sure how comfortable about being spray paint nazis now. Will GML's have to get photos of the spray cans used? I mean honestly we could just go with "blue grey green" top coat.

Or we add in level 3 and flat out say "has to be Pantone colors X and X with photos of the cans used."

Honestly his costume has significant differences than the rest of the muddies, it's not just cosmetic it's worth a shot tbh.

Level 3 isn't really a program here at Spec Ops...it's either Level 1 (Basic Approval) or Level 2 (Specialist) for us.

Anything past Level 1 doesnt go through GMLs.  It goes through us here at Spec Ops...the Specialist approval team.  So theoretically, GMLs shouldn't be that strict on the paint color we list at Level 2.  Currently, Mudtroopers don't have an approved Level 2 Specialist, but myself and @Blackwatch would be involved w/ that approval along with Mudtroopers on staff @Tarrif and @rickyboyblue

So I guess what I'm saying is...the spray paint police would only be here at Spec Ops.  We could (would?) require shots of the paint cans used, etc.  Level 1 should only have a generic color listed.  Level 2 can be as accurate as we wish to make it...someone mentioned earlier it would be a shame to lose the colors we know were used.  Good info.  I kind of agree with that statement.  The other side of that though is...will Level 2 be achievable by anyone if we stick to the color demands?

Speaking of Level 2 requirements...is the tunic fabric hard to come by in the real world?  The few troopers I've talked to that look EXCELLENT (in my opinion) have been held up on a Level 2 application due to that fabric.  Do we need to make an adjustment there as well?

If people are going to really go "full mud" then we should stick by the 433u.

Regarding the fabric. I was able to buy some olive bull denim, that after some gray weathering might fit the bill. But even that olive isn’t an easy color to find. However in months of searching I haven’t found an olive gray bull denim. I found an olive gray twill, while technically not a bull denim is still a twill like bull denim. My next route was looking at getting natural undyed bull denim which is fairly easy to find and dyeing it to olive gray. But that is quite a bit of work and would be really difficult to be consistent.

The technical definition of a bull denim is a 3x1 twill weave with warp and weft threads dyed together as the same color.

Personally I think the fabric choice should be made a little more generic by calling for a heavy/medium weight twill - even “bull denim” seems to be a term mostly used to describe upholstery fabric, and the even less common bull drill or cotton drill terms occasionally showing up for clothing weight fabrics. I could show someone a mid/heavy twill fabric, call it bull denim, and they’d never know the difference unless it’s someone familiar enough with fabrics to tell the difference between a 3x1 and 2x1 twill weave.

On the left is a heavy 3x1 bull denim, on the right a medium 2x1 twill. Side by side, and close up like this you can tell the difference, but at arms length most couldn’t tell them apart. Reference image also for comparison.

“Mid to heavy weight, Olive gray twill fabric” I think would suffice. It definitely needs to be a twill for the accurate look, and not a light weight fabric so that it looks like a jacket and doesn’t drape like a shirt, but the bull denim part is going to be impractical IMO even for level 2.

I can’t even recall when Bull Denim came in to the conversation.

My production source only ever described the screen used material as “heavyweight olive grey denim”.

Mudtrooper references thread updated.  I could use a nice close-up reference of the DLT-19 (with flashlight if available) if anyone has a pic of such.

Let's save color discussion for last (again lol) then.

Tunic...so there are no major qualms then about adjusting the text and removing "bull denim"?

I wholeheartedly support the removal of bull denim.

On the colours bit, I would like to raise the point that when names of colours are dropped, they are generally from a particular part of the world where it is readily available to be procured. For example, Montana Gold Yellow Cab. Not so easy to source in other parts of the world, and even more challenging to import aerosol cans by air.

But I agree that it is good to stay true to the actual screen used paint since it is found.

If I can suggest, adding the words “similar in shade to <actual colour>“ might provide some much needed allowance for those who do not have easy access to them, while staying true to the documentation of what was actually used.

For consideration, thanks.

HAN

Raider is right.  This is a very old discussion that pre-dates my ten years in the Legion. Han belongs to the RL. Ive seen this discussion come up in both clubs a couple of dozen times, it comes up in each at least twice a year.

Screw

is this the M4 screw being referred to? https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-M4-0-7-x-25-mm-Zinc-Plated-Steel-Socket-Cap-Recessed-Hex-Screw-3-per-Bag-803258/204281932

Im going to head out of town for a few hours, and when I get back, I will make up the changes, including someting along the lines of color similar to.  I concur that unit members in the same garrison should match, it was a big thing in the Rebel Infantry when I ran that, making sure that people in the same Base used the same paints, and that the same guy painted everones gear "when possibiel"  I painted all of our gear here and when we stand in a group, our camoflauge matches.  so color consistency is appreciated.

Ok so busy day today, got a lot of things on the home front accomplished.  So lets take a look at this proposals:

Take a good look at the gogggle text.  I added the requested line to the bottom of the text as published.  Is this not the same thing?

·         Serrated 1" (25mm) slide buckles on each side of the goggles through which the 1" (25mm) elastic is threaded.

·         Goggle straps are approximately 1" (25mm) and 1.5" (40mm).

·         1” (25mm) webbing should be used to attach serrated buckle to goggles.

OK< HERE IS THE UPDATED PROPOSAL FOR CHANGES TO THE MUD TROOPER.

I lost some of the formatting going between the CRL, WORD and here in the forum, but the text remains the same.

@Blackwatch  Looks good.  Lower belt and tunic settled.  I feel that what you did there is a good compromise of the color.  Keeps the Pantones but provides some flexibility.  Shins need the color update as well however.

I think the goggle strapping last line can be combined or be a sub-bullet of the line above it regarding the 25mm.  It's an extension description of how the strapping should be accomplished.

These would be the remaining items that need to be settled then:

1) M4 hex screw.  Does the specificity of M4 need to be Level 1 (personally I feel not) or Level 2?

2) DLT-19 added to optional w/ flashlight.  I need reference shots emphasizing that please.

3) Drop box approx. dimensions.  Pull those in for Level 2 or leave out entirely.

4) Respirator rubber trim.  It's being removed, but I believe I read somewhere that while it isn't rubber trim, it was confirmed that there is an interior mask which is what gave us the appearance of trim.  Maybe I misread or am remembering wrong.  Are we adding that in place of the trim?  See picture below as an example.
