  1. i just made commentary on the propoosed CRL. The CRL only describes the four pockets, and the images that will be approved will bear that out.

We will need to wait and see about approving the eight pocket variant. Definitely talk to your GML since he or she will be making the call based on the published CRL. I was pretty by the book , what I see in the CRL picture and what is in the CRL text when I was a GML.

  2. I would think that that the backpack version would be a different named costume. When I was building mine several years ago, I took that to be a demolitions expert carrying Mengalore torpedoes, and that is how I was intended to build it. Olivier used Thermal Detonators on his orignal build, simliar to what can be interpreted on the art.

Question: Has the Pioneer (soft cap, shortie gloves) been removed, or will it be integrated as a option? The main reason I ask is that there is no differentiation in the gloves, like in the original CRL proposal. Engineers had the ganutlets like TIs and Pioneers had short search gloves like Officers. I have both. Only the Trooper near the top has a mention of the guantlets, indicated for level 3. It would be confusing to have the same description, but photos indicating one without guantlets.

Originally the only Tab present was on the Pioneer, but to me it makes sense to add it to both uniforms since it is a distinction that would be earned early in a troopers career.

    CRL Proposal Observations:

Imperial Army [DH1] I believe this should read Imperial Engineer Trooper

    Web Harness

    For 501st approval:

    • Black colored, double strap “H†harness which travels from the lower back, and up over the shoulders.
    • The harness system attaches to the belt.
    • Harness is made of 2 inch olive green nylon webbing CCP from the Army Trooper, should read black webbing.

    Belt

    For 501st approval:

    • Belt is a nylon military style quick release web belt.
    • Belt is olive green in color. CCP from the Army Trooper, should read black

    Belt Pouches

    For 501st approval:

    • Belt pouches are black in color and should be made of nylon or similar material.
    • MA47 double handcuff MOLLE PALS belt pouches should be on either side of the belt buckle where the harness meets the belt.
    • A tactical triple magazine PALS belt pouch should be on the rear of the belt where the left harness strap meets the belt.
    • Any additional OD black MOLLE style pouches are encouraged to fill out the belt, but are not required. Strike OD

Boots are discussed twice in seperate areas, once under belt, again where you would normally find boots in a typical CRL.

  3. Just a quick update. Some of my pouches are in, and my Pioneer gloves are in. The gloves that were linked in the resource list fit me perfectly , free shipping, and on sale for under four USD!!!!

I still need to tighten things up on the suit, my wife has been using the sewing machine thi week but I will get the suit sloppiness sorted out.

I am still waiting on m belt and the last of my pouch3s, and patches.

  4. Update 1: My webbing just came in. I will have my straps done in thirty minutes.

Update 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6: I have all the parts ready, and have taken photos of everything we have.

    Update 7 8 9 10 and 11:

    UPDATE 12:

With the change to the crl proposal I scrapped mine harness rig and started from scratch. I ordered more pouches for the crl and I will be building up the snaps that will go on to the pouches. It may take a day or two for the pouches to come in. I finished my harness with triglides last night.

    Update 13

    CHANGE LOG 5

I remade the harness AGAIN so that it would fit my shoulders, and follow them vs poking up like Commander Spock shoulders. This time I proportioned the curve to fit ME better, and moved the front of the belt up, moving the horizontal strap down to my mid shoulderblades. I consider this a complete redo.

I took yet another set of photos, one WITH and one WITHOUT goggles, in case the LMO decides against the use of goggles.

    Change 3 log:

I have changed the coveralls per the new CRL, and added a couple more pouches to the belt.

The coveralls are changed to reflect the new CRL proposal with leg cargo pockets with flaps, stuffed to appear full, I took off the lower leg patch pockets and took off the SAPPER tabs. I added a notched greeblie to my old Gina hat Ive had for years. No other changes made other than whats listed above.

My Imperial Engineer & Pioneer are underway.

As you can see from my status bar, I have my hat and boots and suit done. I ordered three pairs of the recommended glove (they were on sale! ) Part of my harness is complete, my two inch webbing will be here soon and I can knock that out in an hour. Ill need a black web belt. Im also awaiting the patches which I ordered from the WTF page. I need to tweak this suit suit for better fit.

I am making my own tabs for this project. Until I can get a proper source for these, I am working with dimensional fabric paint and embroidered edges. Im flipping the channel back to 2008 when we didnt buy, we made (cause we didnt have vendors making stuff like we do now).

  5. here's my list of links from the JRS, I just copied it directly from there.

Ill have time this weekend to check all the links.

    *updated July 2016

    Edited as required.

I will consolidate my list of boot links here, using newly found, and previously available and still "live" boot vendors.

If you are like me and have really big feet, look to motorcyle boots, as European boots will not usually be made in your size. They top out at US 13.

Wide calf ladies boots. Other than the upper strap not being there, these are very close to Sportsmans Guide's Engineer boots. A bit tall, you may need to trim the top down.

http://www.Sportmansguide.com often has vintage, surplus boots from around the world. check thier website as well. Also check for the Size Zip engineer boot at that site. Available in wide sizes.

Leatherup .com has served many here over the years.

  6. In discussion with the others in my Garrison that want to do this, we want the tab to go over the patch.

We can get tabs made from a dozen places online, in fifty different fonts, but none in Aurbesh.

Im going to TRY to embroider them here on my wifes embroidery machine, but we have not had good luck with that in the past since it is not set up to do curved off-center text.

I know Aurbesh is used on many of our Legion patches. Would it be prudent to set up a short run of patches with "sapper" or "Engineer" as a basic text ?

Here's what I have in mind, incorrect color and language mind you:

    =====================================================================================

    UPDATE 5/6

Here is where I got the font, this site has been useful for years

    http://davidocchino....y/aurebesh.html

My wife has a home embroidery machine and uses a program she purchased online to lay out the designs , alter the stitch, tell the machine in what order to stitch..all VERY important to success.

If you try this at home you want the machine to completely stitch the border first, go inside the border and start the text. She opened each characters properties, and rolled and adjusted each character to match the curve of the tab. This all took about three hours for the first successful tab to be created, but now she has the file and can adjust.

Your tab will have your own unit motto or name, per the CRL.

The first pic is of the first attempt, which was a complete failure. The machine didnt know to finish the tab border first, because she didnt know to tell it to do that. She had to figure that part out. Your machine and your program will be different, thats all I can say, because there are a bunch of programs out there.

    9d0xieI.jpg

In these two photos you can see how she is altering the text with a character text box around one, moving, resizing and manipulating it to match the curve of the tab.

    FBsklh8.jpg

My very first suit layout the day after I got it all together. The LMO had me remove the tab since its not seen on the characters with no helmets/packs.

  7. Looking through it again, i would like to propose a minor addition to the pioneer verbage . Having been both a GML and Costume Judge and written a bunch of CRLs and Standards, I think this would ward off some issues in future as this moves forward.

    Currently reads:

    Imperial Army Pioneer Configuration

    For 501st approval:

    • Worn: Hat, Flightsuit + Patch, Harness, Belt, Belt Pouches, Boots, Black non-gauntlet gloves

    My proposal:

    Imperial Army Pioneer Configuration

    For 501st approval:

    • Worn: Hat, Flightsuit + Patch , or Patch and Tab combination, Harness, Belt, Belt Pouches, Boots, Black non-gauntlet gloves

    Reasoning:

Maintains Level 2 consistency between both verisons of the uniform with the same flight suit.

    Discussion:

Lets face it, some GMLs are very by the book , or in this case CRL. By going Detachment Level 2 on the coverall for the Engineer with helmet (shown in the original art ) it can and likely will be argued by some GMLs that the tab would not be permitted on the Pioneer version when the photos are submitted to the GML for review. The inclusion of the tab as an option at the outset of the Pioneer allows a person to get that up and running first, while waiting on the more expensive helmet, which some people will not opt for. Most of us old timers have at least two black Officer hats, and with SewingJenny, WampaWear , RunyaJadje and other makers available at the time, the Pioneer is a quicker starting point.

The caveat to this is if the art never depicts the soft cap NCOs/ Officers with tabs, which I would realistically find hard to understand from a real world experience perspective of having to earn those tabs early in their career.
