The thing I like is it makes it a little more natural, where the parts you would expect to wear are the worn areas.

Did you weather on top of the already painted blaster? Did you use a white or silver paint? One good way to weather is to do a primer (gray/silver) and then paint it black. Once all that is try, take it out and scrap it lightly (ground, wall, whatever). This will help the primer layer show through and overall look more natural.

I would try the exacto first as acetone can definitely deform/mess up the plastic if used too sparingly or too long. Place a piece of plastic in acetone for a few others and it can dissolve complete.
