Andor trooper fabric comparison photo request
TeaJay replied to Blackwatch's topic in Imperial Army Trooper - Andor
Exactly! It pulls out some excess dyes that didn't fully adhere to the fabric and adds a bit of a weathered effect lightening up high spots on the uniform around the pocket flaps, etc. Not required, but adds a good worn-in look just as Daniel mentions. -
Aha! Makes sense!

The photo of the two bells, is the left one (green) a resin bell prepaint? Right side is the right track. Indoor lighting is always deceptive.

Keep going to the black end of the spectrum. Adding a flat clear coat will knock some of the shine off too. It helped my build quite a bit.

The hemline for the lower pockets go all the way to the bottom as seen here. There are other close up shots during the raid where it is also seen. Towards the end of episode 6 is where you'll get some better close ups. Here's a good shot of it in a high res behind the scenes shot: -
I'm glad everything worked out well. Quite impressive that it went from brown, to blue, to green. Great work on this!

I added new photos to the shared Google Drive folder for L2 boxes by themselves and on the belt. I also took updated photos of my hat, tunic, and trousers, in case you want them in better lighting. The original lighting made them look darker. See all here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1rCI9_phNdunZo9prwVgo3kVRJm7bERgx Suited up photos coming in a day or so! My wife is currently out of town and coming home tomorrow night. When she's back I'll get photos either that night or Monday after work at some point. Stay tuned! UPDATE: Added a transparent background and updated the L2 belt box on belt photo, just now. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KV4zg9Bpq4beDtl0RA81c_Gw2xZCNhlV/view?usp=share_link -

Awesome news! I'm still planning on taking updated photos as soon as my new level 2 belt boxes arrive, they should be here in the next couple days. My soft cloth parts look less green than they used too as well. So I like the newer look much more. Plus my clearcoat on my armor dulled the shine some, which is nice. -

Great news on the stain! The base denim used by KeepTrooping / ImperialBoots is a dark indigo. As we all know, the uniform ships with the normal outside material on the inside... it looks like that dye has made its way to the other side of the fabric when using the dye remover. Yes, you can do it another time if you'd like. It may lighten the blue some more, but if you notice that the texture/feel of your fabric is becoming more rough or "fuzzier" than before. Be careful not to over do it. Do not use bleach even if you want to lighten it a lot, it will do much more harm than good. Looking forward to seeing the green dye added back in. Good luck! -

I would recommend using a non-chlorine bleach based color remover similar to this: https://www.ritdye.com/products/color-remover-2/ There are similar products on the market that you can use to pull the color out of the fabric without excessive damage to it. Here are instructions on its use: https://www.ritdye.com/instructions/how-to-use-rit-color-remover/ I would suggest using a "color remover" like the product above which will lighten the dark brown and then thoroughly wash it, then use the dylon olive color again. As for the stain spots that you currently have, the color remover will help with this, but not fully remove it. It will also depend on what the stain is from, oil, specific chemical? I would definitely consider getting some green tones back into the uniform when you are able. As Blackwatch noted, it will be a bit more of a challenge for dyes to absorb in the same manner with the introduction of various acidic washes such as vinegar and even this non-chlorine bleach color remover, but it will still allow you to get more green back into the uniform. -
Just seeing these two posts now @Blackwatch and @Hoda. I have not added the hooks yet, but have them and plan on having an underbelt for them. I will have to show photos. I just wanted to stop in and mention that I ordered a set of Aldhani / Andor sized belt boxes from Ezra @Alay at https://www.etsy.com/listing/1408787272/imperial-officer-belt-box-set-of-2-star?click_key=b925a56f929087790956bd3667de51647e2ab02c%3A1408787272&click_sum=8f7e28a4&ref=shop_home_active_1&crt=1 to replace my Rogue One (Non-saga) ones to meet the L2 requirement. Along with some officer items for another costume. Once I have these on hand, I'll paint them and retake my photos. I'll be sure to get the hooks on my tunic installed by then. At that point everything on my build will be L2. ---- To Do List is: Andor costume -- - Find similar green thread to reinforce tunic - Add hooks ( place holes in underbelt that fit me) - Spray paint new belt boxes from Ezra (once received) - Take new photos

I know for certain that the detachment staff will need photos of someone fully suited up with the armor and helmet variant. They will also need photos of just the helmet for the individual item component listed in the CRL. @Blackwatchwhat else do you all need? I'm planning on retaking my full body photos since I've lightened my uniform since the original photos. -

This is my personal opinion, and you all do you... but I encourage folks to avoid Taramyn's color scheme as it appears to be drastically different from all other cast members. Unless folks are specifically trying to recreate his costume. -

I would recommend holding off on using brown at the moment for @Vanedor's re-dye. He should be able to get the color he is looking for using less Apple Green. The bummer about his situation is even if he has extra undyed test fabric it will not fully mimic how the dye will take on his already dyed uniform that has the lighter green coloration. As you mention, he can test with any extra fabric he has... still might be worth testing hue of his latest dye batch color... -

Agreed with you that this is too bright. The formula for RIT's Olive Green is made up of three colors. It looks you may have had a little too much "Apple Green" in the mix. If you're okay with some shrinkage on the uniform, I'd recommend washing it in hot water and detergent once, let it dry, try it on to see if it's getting too small, if not wash it one more time in hot water and detergent again. This will help pull any excess dye in it out.... Once you've pulled out as much excess as you can, prep a new dye batch making sure your water is at least at 60C/140F, add in the same amount of salt as you did in your original batch, 1 teaspoon of Dawn Dish liquid, and stir. Prep your dye into the hot water, but use less "Apple Green" and focus on the "Dark Green" and "Pearl Gray" colors. Repeat the same amount of water, use 1/4 less - up to 1/2 less of your original amount of Apple Green and use the same amount of Gray and Dark Green -- Stir thoroughly. You'll still want some Apple Green in the dye batch to prevent things from getting too dark. Take your time and make sure everything soaks for at least 30-40 minutes. Keep stirring every 10 minutes for at least a minute. This seems just a tad dark to me, but it could be the lighting angle. That's just my opinion though... I guarantee that if you wash it in warm to hot water with detergent or something like oxyclean (depending if you're okay with some shrinkage of the material), you'll get the color a small shade lighter. Ironing the costume on a high heat with moisture also helps fade specific high parts (like pocket flaps) and makes a subtle (and nice if you ask me) weathering effect... assuming you'd want that effect. Overall, I feel what you have still fits the color range of what we're looking for. I feel like a wam/hot wash would work some magic if you're willing to give it a go. -

Let's talk through it on your build thread rather than the CRL creation thread. As GML of our garrison, I would approve this slight color difference as it is minimal and is cannon to what we've seen with troopers in the episode. Your uniform has less noticeable contrast in color than the trooper here: which is a great thing... ideally members are not trying to recreate the same drastic color difference as seen with this specific soldier. Again, as GML of my garrison, I'd approve it. Personally I like the darker olive green with the RIT color dye formula than Dylon, as I'm trying to match closer to Nemik and a few other background performers at the checkpoint: I see @fb501 😆 -

Not sure if detachment command is going to make the soft parts only a separate CRL. I remember a few of us proposing the idea of separating the soft only from the others with armor and I believe they were in favor of combining helmeted armored, soft cap armored, and soft cap no armor all together into one. Not sure where they landed on it yet. -

Dulled down the vibrancy of my green by doing a few additional hot washes with oxyclean stain remover. The water was noticeably green each time, so I knew it wasn't in vain and it truly lightened everything up. Pulled these out of the tote for a quick photo on the CRL creation discussion thread. I figured I'd add it here too. -

The Dylon Olive Green will be within the color range seen on screen. The RIT Olive Green dye formula and other similar colors I've tested can be compared here: https://forum.specops501st.com/topic/8801-dye-testing-rit-brand-aldhani-soft-goods/ I tested 9 different RIT formulas with a similar Olive Green style tone. My final color after dyeing with RIT is darker than the premixed Dylon. The photos on that thread of my final results have changed. I've washed the uniform on hot 3 times with oxyclean stain remover to lighten the color. Dylon Olive Green works well for those who don't want to mix multiple dyes with the RIT approach. I spent weeks nailing down color options with RIT. There are some videos on that thread too.
